Film and TV often portray all of Southeast Asia as a monolithic, non-stop, six-month monsoon in the rainy season. This is far from reality–the rainy season runs from May to October for much of Thailand, and the heaviest rains come in August, September, and October.

November is the most popular month to visit for a few reasons. There is still plenty of moisture left over from the rainy season, and the landscape is predominantly green. The crowds are just starting to arrive, and things have yet to get extremely busy.  

December, January, and February are the second-best months, but the most crowded. These are the coolest months of the year. Nighttime temperatures are often far lower than the daytime highs, and with the windows rolled down, visitors may even feel a slight chill.

Sun-worshippers will enjoy this time of year, but it’s important to stay very well-hydrated. Vegetation and rice fields will likely be dry, but conditions for things like scuba diving will be at their best, as there is little rainwater runoff to ruin the visibility.
