Around Krabi Town

Despite being a provincial capital, Krabi Town is a modest-sized city. Walking across town takes less than ten or fifteen minutes, and there are many things to see. You can start your morning with a visit to Wat Kaeo Korawaram in the city’s heart. 

This gleaming white temple shines brightly in the sun. The steps up to the temple have traditional bannisters made to resemble the Thai Naga (snake-like creatures that are spiritual guardians of the temple) that reach all the way to the top. Nearby are other smaller temples and places of spiritual worship.  

Next, head down to the riverside on the north side of town and look east. From there, you’ll see two large limestone karsts rising dramatically from the mouth of another small river that feeds into the bay. These are known as ‘Khao Khanap Nam,’ and they are the city’s official symbol. 

For a modest fee, you can hire a boat to take you to see the Khao Khanap Nam Cave. This site holds ancient human skeletons, pottery, and other signs of early Thai civilization. Modern scientists believe the cave’s inhabitants perished in a sudden flood, and their remains are key evidence that people have lived in this region for millennia. 

Finally, head back downtown and visit the Krabi Town Night Market for a colourful array of street food, handicrafts, and cultural performances. 

Outside Krabi Town

One of Krabi’s most famous temples is Wat Tham Suea, better known as the ‘Tiger Cave Temple.’ The cave itself is not the main attraction, however. People come to see the nearly 200-metre-tall limestone mountain that rises straight out of the valley floor with a golden Buddha statue at the summit. 

Reaching the top requires determination and several stops to catch your breath as you ascend 1,260 stairs to the peak. At the top, your reward is a stunning view of the entire region. You can see the nearby mountains to the west, Krabi Town to the south, and endless farm fields to the east and north. 

After descending, head towards Ao Nang. On the way, you can pay a visit to Wat Sai Thai, a small and unassuming roadside temple with a secret that cannot be seen from the road: a large reclining Buddha nestled against the sheer limestone rock face. Spend a few minutes walking around and enjoying nature before continuing to Ao Nang. 

This small town is the gateway to the famous Railay Beach, a nearly 600-metre-long pristine beach flanked on each side by limestone cliffs rising high into the sky. It can only be reached by longtail boat, and is the prime reason many people choose to visit the Krabi area. Once there, you can spend some time on the sand and grab a drink. Alternatively, if you book in advance, you can stay at one of the small hotels that dot the tiny peninsula.
