Where to Stay In Krabi and for How Long

Ao Nang

When most people visit Krabi, they rarely stay in Krabi Town itself. This isn’t to say Krabi isn’t a charming place–it’s a quiet port town with plenty of great food and a few sights to see. However, two nights here is plenty, as there is much more to see across Krabi province. 

Many people choose to stay in nearby Ao Nang, just twenty minutes down the road. Ao Nang is a quiet beach town with a long stretch of coastline and serves as a jumping-off point for a thirty-minute boat ride to the stunning Railay and Tonsai Beaches. 

Here, visitors can relax on pristine beaches with shallow water. These beaches are only accessible by boat, thanks to the 150-metre limestone karsts surrounding it on three sides. 

The vibe in Ao Nang is relaxed with charming bungalows, beachside restaurants, and activities like kayaking and rock climbing. At low tide, it’s even possible to walk around the limestone cliffs to other beaches inaccessible at high tide. Those planning on visiting Ao Nang should spend two to five nights, but many stay longer for the chill vibes and excellent dining. 

Koh Phi Phi

The other most popular place to stay outside of Krabi is Koh Phi Phi. Scuba diving, snorkeling, and longtail boat day trips through the archipelago are popular activities. There are also numerous viewpoints that travelers can trek to the top of to get spectacular views of the bay. 

The food options in Koh Phi Phi are as diverse as the tourists who visit. There are no vehicles on the island–only the occasional golf cart–and there is a regular ferry service between Krabi Town and the islands. 

This journey takes a few hours unless you opt for a pricey but adventurous speedboat. It should be noted that while Koh Phi Phi is often crowded with tourists, it’s for good reason. This island is arguably one of the most beautiful places in all of Southern Thailand. Spending two to three nights here is just the right amount of time. 

Koh Lanta

Finally, visitors who enjoy the quiet life should consider Koh Lanta, located two hours south of Krabi Town. There is a vehicle ferry service available for your rental car, and you’ll need it–Koh Lanta is a sizable island. 

Koh Lanta’s small towns and natural destinations are spread out and take time to reach. Many who visit the island planning to spend a few days end up staying for a week or more to enjoy the tranquility and see as much as possible.

Outside of these areas, Krabi province and the southern peninsula of Thailand offer endless options to those with a sense of adventure. The quality of the roads is excellent, and there isn’t a single road that doesn’t offer gorgeous views of the unique landscape.
